Our research question:

“To what extent does gender socialization impact social media consumption? Does social media reinforce gender stereotypes already attributed to various professions and/or interests?”

Our hypothesis:

Social media reinforces gender stereotypes to the extent that users, and especially male users, will choose to engage more with content that aligns with traditional gender roles, emphasizing traits such as athleticism in men and sexuality in women.

Our methodology:

We combined qualitative and quantitative analyses by analyzing 5701 verified accounts followed by 36 female and 36 male classmates on Instagram, and following this data up with in-person interviews. Through our individual commentaries, we carried out extensive literature revews on the matter and supported our findings with both existing literature and current statistics provided by Instagram.
